0Media Allstars Blow the Competition Away! Sunday Creek 2012 Race Report
Morehead, KY – Sunday Creek Raceway in Millfield, OH was the site for round 7 of the 2012 ATVA MX National Motocross Series. Smoldering heat and temperatures in the high 90s greeted racers as they took to the track for Friday’s practice sessions. The extreme heat wasn’t the only surprise Mother Nature had up her sleeve though. As practice concluded Friday afternoon she tipped her hand and a massive Thunderstorm with fierce lightning and high winds swept through the area. Pit crews were sent scrambling to save their tents, awnings and EZ-ups. With wind gusts toppling trees and snapping limbs around them they held on with hopes of minimizing the damage. This was no different for Team Media Allstars, but as the storm rolled out it was clear that many of the efforts were in vain. Several Teams and Riders found their pits devastated from the winds…the Media Allstars were one of them. The storms were strong enough to knock out power in most of South Eastern Ohio and the entire I-77 corridor, so to complain about a few thousand dollars worth of awnings, signs and tents seems fickle. The fact that no one at the track was hurt now seems to be a small miracle.
After seeing their entire pit set up mangled from the storm the Media Allstars took to the track on Saturday morning determined to take out their frustrations with Mother Nature out on their competition, and that’s exactly what they did!
Dylan Tremellen #940 pulled off a team first by earning a motocross hat trick. “Mighty Mouse” looked like he was on a mission all weekend as he took home a hard earned win in the College Boy 16-24 class by fending off 3 of his team mates. Dylan also finished up 2nd in the 450A and 3rd in the 4-stroke A classes, giving him the MX equivalent of hitting for the cycle in baseball. Dan Hoisington #71 was right there with Dylan in the heat of the College Boy class battle. Dan led the entire 2nd moto until a bobble on the last lap gave way to his team mate taking the moto win and the top spot on the podium from him. Hoisington keeps getting closer and closer to that number 1 spot on the box and we expect to see him up there anytime now, he’s got the speed to make it happen.
Brett Musick just keeps winning. Brett brought home 2 more overall wins in the 450B and Production B classes at Sunday Creek. Musick was another one of the teams College Boy racers as well. Brett won the first moto on Saturday edging out 3 of his team mates but a poor holeshot in Sunday’s main event opened the door for Tremellen and Hoisington to take advantage. Brett showed he’s got the speed to mix it up with the A class guys though as he was hot on their heals the entire moto. He finished up going 1-4 in the 16-24 class to complete the Media Allstar Podium sweep of the class for the second straight weekend.
Calen McGinty rounded out the 1-4 place sweep for the Media Allstars in the College Boy class as he went 6-5 for 4th place. Calen also rode his way to a 4th place in the Open A class by earning moto scores of 6-4. The West Frankfort, IL native has put together a very solid rookie season in the Open A class as he’s found himself inside the top 5 on 4 separate occasions and he’s graced the podium twice in the first 7 races. Another rider that has been showing steady improvement all season long is Josh Holley #7. Josh had his best finish to date aboard his Cobra 90 by going 3-3 for 2nd overall in the 90 modified (8-11) class. Josh got on a roll at Sunday Creek last season and became a podium machine during the second half of the year; don’t be surprised if history repeats itself. Josh’s brother Matthew Holley #9 was on his way to another podium performance but a blown motor in his Cobra 50 sent him to the back of the pack. Matthew is getting better and better as the season drags on and like Josh he’ll find his way to the top of the box soon.
Chase Cunningham #419 finally shook free of some bad luck to take home 2 podium finishes. The team captain went 3-3 for 3rd in the 25+ class and 4-5 for 3rd in the Open A class. Chase was showing signs of regaining his championship form from a year ago at High Point but that weekend it was not to be, that changed at Sunday Creek and he found himself back where he expects to be…on the podium!
Cunningham’s bad luck seems to have found its way to another team member. Jake McGraw #83 earned a 5th place in moto 1 of Production A and used his Moto-Xperts motor to rocket out of the gate for moto 2. Jake passed for the lead on the 2nd lap and was on his way to a moto win and a much needed confidence booster before a broken spindle on his LTR450 left him sitting on the side of the track as a spectator. The Piketon, OH native was hoping for a breakout performance this close to home. The other half of the McGraw brothers Austin McGraw #114 had a solid weekend in the 450B class as he went 2-5 for 5th overall. Austin lead his heat race until the last 2 feet as he was edged out by a 7 hundredths of a second!
The team’s vet riders had good weekends as well. Dale Batson (who celebrated his birthday at the track) went 8-11 for 8th in the 30+ class and C.D. Musick put in a strong effort in the 40+ as he went 5-4 for 4th. Both riders are in the top 5 in the championship point’s race in their respective classes.
Media Allstars Alumni Riders Casey Martin and Nacy Stone also earned their keep. Casey has been a consistent threat to Pro-Am Production point’s leader Cody Gibson all season and remains the only rider to beat him straight up in a moto. The #75 Honda went 2-2 for 2nd at Sunday Creek and sits in 2nd place for the year. Stone, who owns his own motocross facility in Mt. Sterling, KY (Bar2BarMX), finished up 6th overall in the 450B class.
The series rolls into New Berlin, NY in less than 2 weeks as racers prepare to take on “The Home of Horsepower”. Team Media Allstars will be there, maybe without a pit setup…but we’ll make our mark on the track and in the results. See you then!
